Mallorca, with someone who knows it

Mallorca is the largest and most varied of the Balearics, and the island that rewards local knowledge most. The south-west is a string of marinas and calas under the Tramuntana foothills; the north is a long, wild coast with two deep bays at Pollença and Alcúdia; the east is a chain of small harbours and sandy inlets that fill by eleven in August. A skipper who has worked the island every season knows which of them is tenable in the afternoon sea breeze, where the moorings are, and which restaurant will still hold a table for a crew arriving by dinghy.

With a skipper aboard, the week is still yours to plan. You decide over breakfast whether to push on or stay put; the skipper handles the boat, the passages, the berthing and the paperwork. For most crews coming to Mallorca for the first time this is the sweet spot between a bareboat and a fully crewed charter.

Where our skippers start from

PalmaLa Lonja, Club de Mar and Naviera Balear. The largest choice of yachts in the Balearics, twenty minutes from the airport, and the old town for the first and last nights.
Port Adriano and AndratxForty minutes west of Palma and already on the doorstep of the Dragonera anchorages. The right start for a south-west and Tramuntana week.
Alcúdia and PollençaThe north coast bases. Cala Sant Vicenç, Formentor and the shortest crossing to Menorca — around 30 miles to Ciutadella.
Portocolom and Cala d’OrThe east coast, for crews who want the sandy calas of Mondragó and Cala Varques without a long first passage.

Three skippered weeks that work

South-west and DragoneraPalma — Portals Vells — Sant Elm and the Dragonera channel — Sóller under the Tramuntana — back by Andratx. Short passages, big scenery, good restaurants every night.
North coast and FormentorPollença — Formentor — Cala Sant Vicenç — Alcúdia bay — Cap des Pinar. Quieter water, dramatic cliffs, and the island at its least developed.
Mallorca to MenorcaAlcúdia — Ciutadella — the south coast calas of Menorca — Maó — and back across. Two islands in one week, with a skipper who has done the crossing many times.

These are starting points. Your skipper will adjust them to the forecast, your crew and how much sailing you actually want to do once you are out there.

Add a chef or a hostess

A skipper runs the boat. A chef and a hostess run the days. Either can be added to a skippered Mallorca charter, together or separately, provided the yacht has the berths for them. Palma’s markets make a chef particularly worthwhile here: provisioned in the morning, lunch at anchor off Cabrera or Es Trenc, dinner aboard when you would rather not go ashore.

Practical notes

  • Cost: The skipper’s fee is quoted separately from the yacht and charged per day, typically €180–250 in Mallorca.
  • Berth: A skipper needs a bunk. On most catamarans that is a dedicated cabin; on smaller yachts, a saloon berth.
  • Food: The charter party provides the skipper’s meals or a daily allowance. We confirm which when we quote.
  • Cabrera: The national park needs a mooring permit booked in advance. Your skipper arranges it if Cabrera is on your route.
  • Season: Peak weeks in July and August run Saturday to Saturday. Outside that, shorter and mid-week charters are usually possible.
  • Licence: None required for anyone in your party.

Good to know

Skippered Mallorca charter questions, answered

Which Mallorca base should we start from?

Palma for the widest choice of yachts and the easiest airport transfer; Port Adriano or Andratx if you want to be in the Dragonera anchorages on the first afternoon; Alcúdia or Pollença for the north coast and the shortest crossing to Menorca. Your skipper will tell you which fits the week you have in mind.

How much does a skipper cost in Mallorca?

Skipper fees in Mallorca run from about €180 to €250 per day depending on the yacht, quoted separately from the boat. The charter party provides the skipper’s meals or a daily allowance; we confirm which when we quote.

Can we sail round Mallorca in a week?

Yes, with a skipper who knows the coast. The circuit is around 160 nautical miles. Most crews prefer a looser week on the south-west and north coasts, with the option of a crossing to Menorca if the forecast suits.

Do we need any sailing experience?

None. Nobody in your party needs a licence, a certificate or previous experience. The skipper is the qualified person aboard, and you can take the helm as much or as little as you like.
